335 engine runs poorly

I've got a 335 with the Kawasaki engine in it.
When started, it runs fine at low idle but when you bring it to fast idle quickly it pops & back fires.
When you bring it up to fast idle slowly there are no pops or back fire.
I engage the pto and the mower starts to die out until you disengage the pto then it catches back up and stays running.
I have spark at both cylinders, I just went through the carb.
Could this be an electrical issue or a fuel issue?
 
If it was mine and since you already adjusted the valves I would.
1. Replace spark plugs, fuel filter, fuel pump, and check fuel tank and the screen on your fuel line.
Sounds like with the power issue and back firing you are starving for fuel and carb is out of adjustment.

I have the same problem with my JD 175 hydro. The spark plug is black so I am running too rich. It is most likely starved for air and I'm going to try and get a new air filter for it.

Try running it without the air filter for a while and engage the PTO to see if it works.
If it works like that it means you either need to clean out the air filter or get a new one
I tried to do this earlier but we recently had a heavy rain and my tractor was outside because of these reasons, so water got in my ignition switch and I have to dry it out. Hopefully I won't have to get a new one.
 
Could it possibly be a coil?
Do the coils have some sort of timing built into them?

Yes Kawasaki has a timing module, They are on the side of the engine as a rule, but I have also seen them built into the ignition switch. This addition to the coil.
