Riding Mower Issues

New member here in need of help. I have used the search tool and come up with nothing. I have a riding mower DYT4000 917.273634. Was running fine, made a weird noise and stopped. I ran it LOW on oil, not out. Flywheel was stuck and i was playing with the pulley underneath the mower and the flywheel broke free. It turns over great now but won't start. I checked the flywheel key and it is fine, plug looked kind of bad so I replaced it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

917273634 CRAFTSMAN TRACTOR Manual | SearsPartsDirect Check first for blown fuse between ignition switch & solenoid. Rule of thumb, ALWAYS check oil level before & after mowing. Check out wiring diagram page 31 in manual posted above.

Results your engine, check air filter for replacement & adjust valves per B&S specs.

Check all wiring & connections, hands on, for being tight & secure, ground cables & straps also. Purchase an inexpensive multi-meter tool at sears and troubleshoot system, cranking, safety switches, etc. & locate problem. This way you can isolate problem vs. thinking it's this or that & changing out parts. Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the quick reply, I shall check the oil first from this point forward, I do it for the motorcycle, not sure why I don't check the mower. Fuse is good.

What kind of "weird noise" did it make? LOL, I know typing out a weird noise is hard to do..

Since it turns over "great" now, It's probably not the valves out of adjustment. Are you getting fire to the plugs? If not, then you might want to check the coil to make sure it didn't get too close to the flywheel or too far away...(using a business card while the magnets are lined up with the coil) This could be why the engine froze up.

Question: When it died, did it died instantly. As in a quick stop. Or was is a normal die like when you turn the key off?

If you're getting fire, Then it could be either a safety switch problem or a carb problem.

I am not getting fuel to the carb, I bypassed the fuel pump and still did not work. Fuel filter and pump are ok though, figure it is a back pressure issue since something is not working. It turns over way too easy, like it is just the flywheel spinning and it is not attached to anything. I also pulled the flywheel and checked the key and it is good. Thanks.

I know you probably can't, but if you can, check to see if the pulley on the bottom of the mower is turning when you try to start it. Your starter turns the flywheel only. If the crank is broke, then that's all that will turn from the breaking point to the flywheel.. The noise you heard, did it sound "internal".. As in coming from the engine?

How do you know the head isn't getting any fuel through the carb? Can you look down through the carb to see the main inlet where the gas comes from the line?

Lifted the mower up with my motorcycle lift. The shaft that comes down from the engine is turning but no pulleys are turning. The noise did sound internal from engine. The fuel filter is empty and I did look inside when I took the top off and saw no gas entering the carb. Thanks for all the help.

One other thing I have noticed is that the mower is really easy to push now. I don't think I could even push it before all this happened. Thanks!!!!

Take the spark plug out and turn the engine over by hand. Can you see the piston come up and go back down?



Pushes easy.

While pushing it look and see if both axles are turning the same direction.

If you can, put your finger over the plug hole & rotate engine to see if it has much compression.. But doing comp test would give a low reading due to the compression releases designed into the camshaft.
