JD L120 Battery Charging voltage is 17.5 VDC?

I'm measuring 17.5 VDC across the battery terminals with engine running from low to high rpm. Is this okay? I ask because a battery I just bought died.

You maybe cooking (over charging) the battery reg volts should be around 14.5volts dc, replace the regulator-rectifier.
