2005 troybilt pony engine

I have the above LM with a 17.1/2 hp IC OHV engine, presently off of mower and on a motor stand
getting good hot fire
keyway in flywheel not sheared or upset
carb cleaned
valves adjusted(even did the 1/4 inch below TDC thing)
it will spit and pop back through the carb, but will not run
valves OK good compression

really strange thing to me is when the piston gets to the top of the compression stroke the magnets on the flywheel is 180 degrees from the coil. a full half turn. never have seen this before. have been trying to get this thing to run for over a month and a half. about ready to make an anchor out of it.

somebody help me !!!!!

I would remove the flywheel and check the flywheel key. May not look sheared, but I have seen flywheels turn 180 and unless you remove the flywheel you won't catch it.

first thing I did, replaced the key,old one as new.
