Tribes living in places where Crocks lurk would all have a totem man who was the crock totem ( generally several of them).
They held the oral knowledge of crocks, handed down for thousands of years.
So apart from not eating crocks or crock eggs their job was to ensure both the crocks & the tribe survived nteractions.
Thus they knew where it was safe to swim, fish, wash or draw water.
They were also very skilled in reading the enviromental signs of the pressence of crocks and in many cases actually spotting them.
When us white wankers turned up, we enlisted the help of the crock totems from different regions to help hunt crocks.
Aboriginies were closely tied to THEIR lands so it was OK for them to cock hunt in some one else's tribal lands particularly if they were being feed with lots of rum and dispossed from their tribal lands.
I was always led to believe American Indians had a similar system.
If a black man needed to cross into another tirbes lands ( before we cam along & stuffed things up ) they would signal the other tribe, then make some sort of offering and if considered sufficient they would be escorted across the territory via a route that did not cause the local tribe any offence.
They treated the White man in a similar fashion and would lead a party across their lands, feeding them as they went .
We mistook this allowing us to be there when all the time they were just trying to get us into some one else's lands.
Then when the same men came back with 200 sheep, they naturally thought the sheep ( or some of them ) were a gift, so we shot all of them for pinching a sheep, ran the sheep on their lands destroyed waterholes, many of which were highly seasonal and called ourselves "Pioneers".
