We are having trouble with yellow jackets making nests in our yard. When you go over their nest with a lawn mower, they come out and chase you and sting you. I've tried the bug spray route but I think the nest extends further than I can reach with the spray. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get rid of them?
Ouch! That's scary. I don't know what else I would do as the spray has always worked for us when we've had yellow jackets. I hope you can find something soon before you are stung again.
Yellow Jackets are one of the worst summertime pests ever. I heard if you use a pyrethrum spray it will kill them. It's made from a plant so I don't believe it's toxic.

Take note of exact location - Wait til after dark - The best thing I have found is a box of moth balls poured into and around the hole. :thumbsup:
Skunks and bears will dig them up, but you might wait forever and the skunks STINK ! :thumbdown:
Yellow Jackets now your talkin... Those are bad news and it is a huge mistake to think of them as bees....
Do as BKBrown suggests "Take note of exact location - Wait til after dark " There are good sprays that will kill them dead. A lot of 'bug' sprays only adjusts their attitude for the next time they encounter you. Are these in paper nests or in the ground... be sure where they are and you can get them... before they get you ... again. KennyV

I've also had people tell me they used a quart of Gas or Deisel fuel -- I used spray and even the foam spray that is supposed to stick to them -- the moth balls worked the best and was the cheapest (got the moth balls at the dollar store). I don't know if they died or left, but they were gone :thumbsup:

interesting BK,never heard of mothballs .might have to give it a try.my boy got stung when he was small and he was playing in some weeds where they had a nest.scared the heck out of me cause he's allegric to stings.I got a 100yr. old barn that has a 28'loft from floor to cealing.yellow jackets and those mean brown wasps build these hugh nests way up so I bought some sprary bombs and taped them on 20' of pvc pipe .most are dead by the time they hit the floor. russ
You can have great fun with yellow jackets/bumblebees etc that nest in the ground..I take my trusty shop vac rest the nozzel near where the nest is and turn it on.in about 30 minets there gone.then I spray a bit of wasp spray into the vac.It's fun watching em try an attack the nozzel only to get sucked in.:laughing:
I had a nest on the side of the hill and they'd burrowed back in beyond gasoline being effective. The next night I used a digging bar to jam into it. I smashed it around pretty good and then used the gas.

HAR HAR HAR I have been telling people I know for years the best way to get rid of wasps etc is to use a powerful shop vacuum. A guy I know took my advice one time to get rid of a big hornet nest and despite my warnings not to get the wand too close to the nest he sucked in a chunk of it and pulled the nest down, let me tell you that would have been a good one to record for AFHV....:laughing:
This may sound dumb but one time I had a nest in the ground where there was no electric outlet nearby, after starting a push mower I taped the engine control down and rolled it over the nest, since the blade supposedly lifts grass for cutting it also sucked up the pests. Sure made a mess of the underside of the deck though.
Will this kill them or just deter them from making a nest there?

For in ground nests. Find hole(s), wait till dark, pour about 1 quart diesel in hole, plug hole with stick or something.
Direct contact of diesel AND/OR fumes will get them as there is no escape out of the plugged hole. Works every time.

Oops, just noticed after I posted, that the thread was 3 years old. Guess the problem must have been solved long ago!!
My personal house I go through my property. Every winter and destroy all nests. Early summer I start traps works enough I guess. I'm not rly sure how effeciant they are
Hello HH! As Kenny said "Nothing is forever except debt and taxes." That was my Grandma's recipe; it worked for her. The only difference is she didn't wait till dark; when she saw them she killed them. Supposedly the ammonia is absorbed in their body and the soap coated their wings. When they found a spot in the yard or field; they would cover it with a piece of plywood or something. Also she used a tin can; I use a sprayer. I too saw the old thread; sometimes the old ones are better. HAGD..T
