I have a yardman 38in cut rider. Just put on a new belt for the mower deck. the belt is an after market thru Home depote, but is says it should fit. The new belt looked a little thicker, but.
Now the problem is the blades keep spinning with the PTO disengaged (Not as fast as when its engaged). Also when disengaged quite a bit of racket comes the deck (Guess its the blades trying to engage?). Help.
Now on another day trying to figure out the problem it seems to me that the belt locked up causing the engine to stop, and sort of lock up so I now can not start the engine?

I'll bet that the belt is slightly shorter, which is no allowing the tensioner retracting it's entire distance, which means that the brake is now NOT engaging.

I agree but you said the belt looked fatter then the old one.
I have a few MTDs and some take a 1/2 wide belt and others take a 5/8 wide belt.
Look to see if the belt sits all the way into the pulleys. But like rivets said it could be to short.
I have found the most MTDs call for a belt to be 78.5 ( just a example ) and the after market ones will be 78 or 79 I always go with the shorter one so the belt don't slip in tall grass. But the blade never stop
