had friend try to change drive belts.the small one was a 1/2 " belt and shouldve been a 5/8" belt then he messed with all the rods.put right belt on and will move in higher gears but wont pull in low gears???any ideas?

You need to put on the correct MTD belt for them to work correctly, a regular 5/8 belt won't work.

My neighbor has an older one with the belt drive. It went down this spring due to worn drive belts. He ordered the size from NAPA, put it on and it has no movement at all. He will not go get the MTD belts. Just keeps trying to get it to go and mowing with a pusher.
