Got it apart, It is the head gasket. Between the cylinder wall and the push rod cavity. But I dropped one of my valve caps, And I guess it went where all those socks go when they disappear in the dryer. Got to pick one up. Guys do you know the torque on the head bolts? and the steel push rod on top, right? thanks Joe

Are you dead sure that it went outside the motor ?
Brcause if it ent inside the crankshaft will find it and play a nice golf shot right through the cases, not pretty.
Or it gets close & personnel with the oil pump also not pretty

no place for it to get inside of motor. Had intake off. had head off motor, when it disappeared.

ok, guys I have manage to do something wrong. put the head gasket on. torque the head bolts, put everything back together. Now it will not start, and backfires out the exhaust.

Recheck your valve clearance with the piston 1/4 inch down on the power stroke. Both valves will be closed.

did not touch the valve adjustment, ran great before I replaced head gasket. just smoked.

got it figured out, exhaust valve was to tight. Thanks again guys for your help.

You have to check/reset the valve adjustment every time you remove the head on a OHV engine. Variations in head gasket thickness, or bolt torque will change the valve clearance
