Would you rather mow, or clear snow?

#1

JDgreen

All summer long I gripe about the mowing I have to do, and the expense of burning diesel fuel and gasoline at $3 a gallon, and all the work involved in taking care of a 5 acre yard, plus a huge garden...and then after putting away the mowing and trimming equipment, I gripe about not being able to play with my snow removal toys.

The grass always grows, except in severe drought, but the snow removal chores are dependent upon the whims of the weather. I spend a lot of time preparing my equipment for the white stuff, and it's a letdown when I can't use anything. Still, when a blizzard hits, I will probably gripe about getting all the snow at once.

Given your pick, would you rather push a mower or shovel snow? Or would you rather drive your lawn tractor cutting the green stuff or moving the white stuff? I honestly don't know which I prefer, however, grass always grows, but if you wait long enough, the snow will finally disappear....

Well if I actually could pick and choose........
I guess I would like to blow snow during July WHILE cutting the grass:laughing:...

I have found if all my snow removal gear is 'set to go' it rarely snows. BUT if I have failed to have things ready it really snows a lot... :smile:KennyV

:laughing::laughing::laughing: that's how it goes !!!

Know how much equipment I have for the white stuff?

JD 4210 4 wd with FEL and Frontier 72 inch rear blade
Craftsman 24 inch, 5 hp dual stage blower
Craftsman 5 hp, single stage blower
Craftsman 4.5 hp, single stage blower
Jacobsen Sno-Burst single stage blower
Honda Foreman 450 ATV with Moose 60 inch County plow and winch

The second and third single stage blowers are older, "88 to '90 vintage, I thought I would get them running for this year...if something fails to start, I have a bunch of backups....

I've never had to remove snow in any great quantity so my opinion is based on opinion only. But I think the snow blowing would be more like fun and the mowing more satisfying. I say that because you can't control the snow so your work could be undone in minutes!

Well, you don't HAVE to clear the snow away, if you don't have to go to work, or can walk to your grocery store, or your UPS delivery man doesn't mind wading thru knee deep snow to deliver your parcels, or if your family members and visitors don't mind getting stuck in your driveway, and your mail person....etc. You get the idea???

In December I enjoy clearing snow.
By March I'm getting really tired of snow, and am looking forward to mowing.
In June I enjoy mowing.

Since I bought my rider last year, I enjoy both cutting the grass or pushing snow just about equally.

One difference though is that if I'm not in the mood, the grass can wait a day or so to be cut. Living in a city, the snow needs to be plowed as soon as possible.

If that is the case, maybe you should look into buying a condo or renting an apartmernt? My 5 plus acre yeards and huge driveway mean a lot of work, but I take pride in caring for them. Partly because I can't imagine and can't afford what it would cost to pay someone to do it...that is how I justify my multi-thousand dollar outlays for a tractor and related power equipment...they pay for themselves because the labor to operate them is free.

It's far too late for that. My property now warrants only 45 minutes worth of work to cut grass, but I'm allergic to grass pollens, therefore it's as I say, I'll never look forward to cutting grass. My new house has 1.3 acres attached, so at last I can justify a riding mower. And, probably, an ATV with plow attached for the 150 ft driveway. And, I'll get away from doing multiple houses like I do now, because everybody up there has snow equipment. Maybe then it'll be more enjoyable, but I doubt I'll ever look forward to either.

I would rather remove snow. A nice warm coat, gloves and boots and I am ready to take on two feet of snow. Sunny skies, fresh air and the sound of the snowblower. What else could you ask for?
Some say and I agree a freshly cut lawn looks nice and is rewarding. A recently cleared driveway and walk look very pretty also. The sun shining down on the snow with crisp lines the snowblower has created cutting through the snow drifts. Everyones lawn looks nice when covered in snow.
When the snow removal is complete you can go inside and enjoy a nice warm fire and a cup of hot chocolate.
Weather it's summer or winter just being outisde and being able to work in the yard is a great source of enjoyment for me.
Take it one day at a time and before you know it the cold will be gone and we will all be cutting the grass and enjoying warm weather again.

Personally i enjoy both! Mowing is kinda a "no brainer" where i mow mostly at night. No cell phone, no stress, just me and the insects, and there are strange ones in the wee hours of the night. Also i'm not as distracted by other things going on around me. I mow 37 acres at my place a week and more for my family. . .its really great!
Snow moving is good for me too. . . time to think, but it is a lot faster pased job, here "Mother Nature" has her own ideas of where to put it and we never agree on the location! I move snow for 2 others beside mine and total length of driveways is probably 1200' long and really wide but if i didnt like it i wouldn't live here or be doing it. Make the best of everything and have some fun doin it!

I have one huge area, about an acre and a half in size, with only a few widely spaced trees, where I can run from roadfront to the end of the mowed area (about 350 feet) in a straight line. It requires little concentration as it has no obstructions but the trees, I love doing it at night, surf LMF or TBN with my Blackberry when it gets boring. I have adjusted the headlights to be low so I don't disturb the folks across the road. The diesel runs hot so Ilike to mow at night if I can.

About snow moving, the only thing I hate about it is when the snow caking on the seat and my jeans melts and soaks the cloth, I can deal with the cold okay but when you get wet clothing and the wind is blowing and it's 20 degrees, well that is when I question why I am I out here clearing my neighbors driveways in this bitter weather instead of being indoors warm and cozy....if I wasn't retired I would probably not be so generous with my time. Cleared the driveway of the folks who just moved in nearby for the first time, they never came out to say thanks. Their loss they can can shovel next time it snows I don't ask for anything except a simple thanks when I help someone.

I found a fix for that. I used to hate coming in soaking wet as well. I found a pair of leggings (ski-pants?) at Burlington coat factory. They are nylon with drawstring waist and lined rather well enough that my body heat doesn't make it to the outside, therefore the snow never melts. I use them solely for snow-removal. I left them up north this last time and during the last big snow here, I really missed them. I went out and bought one of those one-piece jumpsuits from Gander at an incredible end-of-season price. Now, I'll just take my snow parka up north and use the jumpsuit down here and at least I'll have snow-removal clothing at both places.

Look for those leggings, just put a pair of shorts on for underneath to carry your wallet, keys, etc. and no more wet legs.

IMO there is nothing better then the smell of freshly cut grass on a beautiful spring day. I only wish it would grow faster so I could cut it more often. I do like the four seasons and very much enjoy clearing snow, but as one poster said, by February I am looking foward to cutting grass again.

I guess a lot depends on the level and quality of your toys. A good example would be my winter set up. I used to have a walk behind snow blower, and clearing snow was enjoyable to a point, except for those windy days. But now with a tractor front mounted blower and a heated cab, its pure pleasure.

I been doing both for so many years now that the thrill is al but gone.
I have a 3 acre lawn and 1/2 ml of driveway.

On top of that i mow 300 acre of hay a year and in the winter i have to clear the snow from around the farm yard and corrals as well as the hay yard, the driveway and field trails.

I rather watch the grass grow and the snow fall

They also seem to have a habit of getting out and crapping EVERYWHERE!! Our last goats got out of our barn, went up to the neighbors (about a half mile away, thank goodness they are our relatives ) and left little presents all over their porch.

I enjoy mowing! Let me rephrase that. I enjoy mowing when I can be riding on the tractor and not pushing it and when I can give it nice stripes.

You won't have any flower beds or bushes after the goats get done with them, those will be eaten too! Or is that your plan  What we used to do in Bolivia was tie them to a cinder-block and let them take care of cutting our hills lol. As long as there was no dropoffs where they could hang themselves you were golden!

I'm in agreement with others. I don't mind mowing, but by fall I look forward to some other activities. The winter is alright as long as we don't get too many storms. This past winter was a pain we got plowable snow every two to three days. I think the biggest issue is the cost of fuel. In my case I need to keep both gas a diesel on hand. Right now I am spending between 30 and 40 dollars per week on fuel. This is geeting tough on a fixed income, but I like the grass cut and neat. Oh, did I mention I need to cut the grass every 3 or 4 days. I have almost 2 acres of moist grass ( this time if the year wet) to cut. My garden tractor got stuck 3 times this week. I have to pull it out with another tractor kind of a pain plus the tractor gets all muddy.

All through the winter I was ready for mowing...
Always ready tor mowing... Even in our 100 and up degree weather (with almost no rain) I'm still liking mowing... Cabs and Air Conditioning are just great for mowing...
But I am not getting to so much because it's been too dry & Hot... nothing is growing...
Wheat is already turning and is being cut, very short this year... will not make much straw this year... too dry this spring ... and we are having August heat in May and June...

I have two units one for grass cutting and one for snow removal. I really don't mind doing ether job. As far as grass cutting goes I start the season with a yearly maintenance and find very few repair problems through the season. Just keep good blades on the mower and clean out the grass of under the mower when I am done mowing. Now I do the same maintenance for snow removal equipment at the beginning of the season. I have a Wheelhorse garden tractor with a snow blower. This unit is pushed to it's limits. Now this unit I just seems I am repairing all the time. Something is always breaking or freezing up. The road snowplow pushes a large bank of snow that has a lot of salt in it in the end of my drive way. This is very hard on equipment. I find when I put this unit away I clean all snow off it real well and oil moving parts I have less repairs through the season. Parts still break that need welding or replacing.

I have never plowed snow before, but I have mowed for years. So I would say plowing, I am always up for new challenges and I love seeing the difference you make with the machines you use. To see your progress that's what makes it fun for me.

Depends on where you live i suppose. I would rather do snow removal than mowing but we dont get much snow in northern va :(.

I love doing both just as much. I love anything with an engine on it. I just love the sound of an engine running. Mowing the lawn is fun, if its not a push mower. Weedwacking aint bad, chainsawing isn't bad either. Snowblowing is kinda fun, but it's like mowing the driveway .

I may have to change my mind about clearing snow,:confused2: with all the rained we had this year if we get that much in terms of snow I will be plowing 24hrs a day through the winter.

I would rather mow any day! While snow removal can be fun at times, being outside blowing or plowing when it is 15 below zero just isn't my cup of tea!

Lets See. Thats a Hard Choice.

1) Mowing Grass: Riding around on a nice hot Sunny Summer day getting a Tan with my Sunglasses on and a few Cold Beers wile listening to the Red Sox on the radio.

or

2) Plowing Snow: Getting all dressed up in hevy jackets, hats, boots, gloves and clearing the snow and ice off my truck that then wont start because the fuel line froze and then needing to shovel my way to the house before even thinking about spending an hour using the Hydralic Floor Jack and breaker bars to mount the heavy cold plow blade to the truck to find out that the Hyd fluid has froze and the Hyd hose burst so its off to the NAPA store to spend $50 for a new hose getting all covered with oil and salt and sand and then plowing out the driveway only to find 2 inchs of shear ice on it where you slip and break your tailbone.

Yea,,, Its a tough choice.

Anyone Hiring in FLA,USA?

Maine: Sure its Cold; But its a Damp Cold!

The third alternative. Is to just sit back have a beer and watch the Mowing Happen.

A nice girl would have the common sense not to wear floozy shoes when mowing...

If they were spiked high heels she could mow AND aerate simultaneously...at least until she twisted an ankle or tore a tendon.
That being said, my vote is for mowing grass on a nice 65*F day.

Well I did both on Saturday. Mowed the leaves in the morning and was pushing snow by 9:00pm Saturday night. We got 16" of heavy white stuff up here in Northwest NJ. Fortunatley, the plow is a quick hook up on the RTV. Put the doors back on, cranked up the heat and radio and went to work (or play as my wife keep stelling me). Apparently, I seem to have to much fun.

I would rather mow grass it is warmer easier work. Normal day mowing for me is 14 - 16 hours long day but not bad I've done it for 24 years. Plowing snow is easy work but we don't get the snow we did years ago. Also as you get older the cold bothers you more. Plus a normal day plowing say 6 inches of snow is about 20 hours in the truck. Couple years ago we had a snow storm that left over 2 feet of snow my 1st shift in the truck was 36 hours straight. Went home slept for 2 or 3 hours then back out in the truck. I guess my main complaint is that it is just boring as hell spending that much time in the truck. With just a radio to listen to and no one to talk to

I've got an acre of lawn, well defined with concrete walks and porches. I shovel the snow from these sidewalks and the main porch we use. The rest of it I use the Oklahoma Approach, "The Good Lord giveith, the Good Lord will take it back." Of course here in central Indiana we haven't had a real blizzard in 30 or more years. I have a CC 2042 bladed, weighted and chained just in case though.

I would actually prefer to clear snow just because the weather is a lot better to bear with that soaking under the sun to mow the lawn.

considering i don't get to snow blow too much I think I d rather do that then cut lawn in 90+ temps right now.. But i enjoy both

Well cleaning up snow you can always dress to be comfortable, but cutting grass it's pretty hard to dress to stay cool. So I'll take snow clean up anyday!

I mow grass with a riding mower, and I clear snow with a shovel...so Id rather mow. There is no Snow clearing equipment within 50 miles of me, so 3 inches of snow closes everything down, and nobody goes anytwhere. But the snow always melts within 3 days, gotta love Texas

Currently I'm doing a little project on my computer comparing a whole winter's worth of plowing v.s. 6 weeks of mowing (How much I make in the timespan)

Right now I'm wishing I lived in Florida

This winter has been a failure in my eyes. The most snow we got in one "storm" was 3.5 inches. I can make as much money as I did from snowblowing all of this winter as I do in one day of mowing lawns!
