I am trying to replace what appears to be a bad battery which I have recharged for many years. I can't seem to find any way to get to the battery. Is there some schematic or instruction I could use to gain access to the battery?

The battery on your model is located mid way down the handle bar assembly on the back side. Charge the unit over night and then use a volt meter to check the battery voltage about 1 hour after you take the charger off of the unit. You should read over 12volts DC when you check it. If it is lower than about 12.5volts DC then the battery is bad and should be replaced.
EngineMan,
Just checked to see if I was stupid enough to have missed the battery on the cross piece. There is no battery there. Just a cross member with nothing on it. Any other thoughts? Thanks for your reply.

Interesting one this..! its got to be somewhere near where the wire that you use to charge it go's in, not many wires in the harness...!
Engineman,
The wire goes in at the deck level and disappears. I upended the mower hoping to see a bolt or a few screws that I could open and find the battery. Nothing. Did check the voltage yesterday and it was about 13volts and the mower started right up. I still want to know where the battery is and how I could access it. Do you think Craftsman has designed a mower with a non-replaceable battery? It does seem odd.

I had this from the same site so try it.....!
You will need to remove the back bagger mount to get to the battery at the back base of the mower deck and the bagger mount is in the way.
Start at the side shoot and then work you way back to the bagger mount. The battery should be under the black cover.
The battery is located in the back cover between the rear wheels.
