Went to the local GM open house today

Their Delta assembly plant, where they build the GMC Acadia, Buick Enclave, and Chevy Traverse SUV's was open to the public for several hours today. But you could only view a limited area of the line, you got to watch them putting trim and dashes and glass into the newly painted bodies, and then raise the chassis underpinnings to mate with the body. Have not been thru an auto plant since '86, amazing just how automatic the operations are. Amazes me too they pay some people nearly $30 an hour just to assemble a few small parts to each body as it moves by, and it appeared to me the speed of the line was maybe 1 mph at most. The guy on the tour in front of me was an employee there, he had his dad with him, a LOT of the workers on the line left their jobs to come over and shake his hand and shoot the BS for a minute then run back to do the next vehicle. Shhhheeeeeshhhhh, no wonder the cars cost so f-----g much if the workers can goof off that much.

Up until recently, you were a co-owner.

And thankfully, had none of their original stock...but my dad in law and his 3 sons did.

Wife's oldest brother is a production engineer at the plant I went thru, I was amazed at just how automated the assembly line has become since the last time I went thru a plant in '86....lots more technology now.

You know that the person that is making $30 hour is giving up almost half of that in taxes, taxes that pay for the military, health care for the poor, and anything else the government thinks it should be spent on. Did you see the person that does the sh-t jobs? Some workers get to work easier jobs then others. You can't judge what little bit you saw as the whole thing, not all those jobs are easy jobs. Is it wrong for someone to make good money for good work or should others decide if your job is worthy of the pay?

Never had any GM stock, but I did a very good job of losing all my Kodak stock.

I wouldn't do that assembly work if they paid $100 an hr. It would drive me nuts doing the same thing all day long

What ya want?,..people ain't completely robots!....yet.
Vehicles arn't that expensive,...i haven't paid more than 5-6 grand for any of mine

Things must be a lot different in Canada then the US. All you are going to get here for 5-6 grand here is well used old worn out junk. Just what are you buying for vehicles? Anything in the US that has low mileage and in good condition starting prices are in the high teens and that isn't new.

I don't know what you call high mile wore out junk?.
In my eyes when a vehicle has made it to a 100 or 200 k there is a pretty good chance it'll make another 100 to 200 k for a fraction of the new price.
Of course it helps when one is mechanically inclined like myself

I paid $4500 for this rust free 98 GMC 1500 6.5 td with 140 k ml on it for my wife 2 yr ago, she has put another 35 k on it without losing a beat.
If she does as good as she did with her $2000 95 gmc 6.5 diesel were she put 120 k on bringing the total to 423 K on that truck with very few break downs( truck is still running good, i use it on the ranch now)

I paid last Febr $4300 for this 07 GMC 3500 SRW D-max diesel, fully loaded, airbags, winch 246 k on it. I spend around a grand on little things that needed attention and $500 for a hidden goose neck ball hitch, I have driven around 3 k with it pulling my trailers,...runs like a charm.
I have another 98 GMC 2500 6.5 td with 30 k ml on it i picked up for $6300 7 yr ago, it got 315 k on it today,..no issues so far.

You go buy new,..i stick with the cheapy ones:wink:

Can't beat GM trucks, they're second to none.

...How come you're still poor then?:laughing:

One can buy a lot of parts for the price diff between a new truck or a seasoned one,...

I was wondering when you and others were going to start the brand bashing. You guys talk about buying local to support the economy, but when someone says anything good about anything that is not made in japan, korea, ect. you start the bashing. You must not be a very good mechanic if your poor, or is that you don't like GM because you can't make money on something that is made good and runs forever. Or when you say "poor mechanics" you must be talking about you poor mechanical skills!!!! Come on with you know it all remarks "poor mechanics"

I think your are talking over his head when you say "seasoned one" I agree with your statements about GM trucks. I have never had one that I didn't put 300,000 miles on and then sell it and then see it still on the road years latter. Just saying.

It was a loan, and GM paid it back fives year early. As far as the bailout money, GM was not the only auto maker to get bailout money Toyota, BMW, ect. got some also.

You are right on every count, make it a lot easier and just call me a *******. I worked with GM for around 25 years and that is what I have always owned and will own in the future. I have seen a lot of bad products that GM has put on the public through the years like it or not. You must not of had it stuck in your *** with one of the first diesel GM pick-ups. I repaired them ( with very poor skills) not made them. I sure hope this makes you very happy because I don't give a **** how you think.

But you said on a thread; Is john deere really worth the money? "If you can't be positive why say anything" But yet you are not being positive now, are you?

As I see it you started it. And yes I am being very negative. I sure don't have to prove a thing to you. If you ask for free advice for repairs I will try to be very helpful but when you start hitting on me not the case.

How many years ago are you talking about, 35+ years ago, that's ancient history. What about Toyota buying back all the vans that liked to burn, that's not so ancient history and that just one story.

Yes I started in the car dealership in the early 60's. They all had callbacks as long as I can remember. Toyota over a Chevrolet. The Toyota will have far fewer repairs through the years. OK why is this? Its a shame that Japan can make a car with fewer repairs then we can. Also US made cars just have a better feeling to drive. I have worked on a lot of different brand cars and trucks through the years and they all have there good and bad points to them. Seeing this is a lawn mower forum no one agrees who makes the best mower so why do you think cars are any different. Now motorcycles what is better a Harley Davidson made of all steel or a plastic Honda. The Harley shakes and leaks oil and the Honda is very smooth, no oil leaks, have owned them both but just love that shake of the Harley 2 cylinder engine and its oil leaks. Now if you want to take a few more hits at me go for it because it wasn't me who **** in your cornflake a this morning.
