how do you guys adjust the valve lash? I've watched a few videos, and some guys go from TDC -1/4 inch, and i've watched others just move the flywheel until both valves are closed.

is backing off TDC 1/4" the correct way? I have a 26hp briggs i'm going to adjust the valves and i just waant to get it right. Damn Youtube is often nice, but, you sure get a lot of "the correct way to do things" on there and they are all different.

Either one will work
1/4" past TDC is the factory method
Base circle is a method that dates back to the long stroke engine days when cams had a significant quietening ramp so you had to get off the ramp
If you are unfamiliar with base circle then go down the fool proof 1/4" path .

Or just do it the old way of having one valve fully open and adjusting the closed one. More time consuming to some but just easier having to find a measuring stick and removing the spark plug.
