I bought a non running snapper hi vac almost 2 months ago and I'm finally going to get around to fixing it this week. It is pretty hard to pull over, and the previous owner did say it was getting harder and harder to start the last few years he used it, so I'm guessing the main problem with it is loose valve adjustment. Anyways, all I've had to go by so far are the few videos I've seen on Youtube. Do I want to spot the engine up at TDC on the compression stroke, and then go 1/4" past that (ATDC) measuring in through the spark plug hole? Do both valves at the same time? or one then the other? If the last one, how do I spot the engine up for each one? And the specs I got from one of the videos was Intake - .005"-.007" and Exhaust - .007"-.009". Are these specs right?

afoulk, Did you try a search on this forum. I do not know your mower , but seems like recently someone had a problem which was the compression release built into the motor was not operating correctly. Try searching.

Thanks rivets! takes for ever to go through that on my phone, but i've gotten to the carburetor section and even that should be a big help. My fuel line looks like it may need replaced, so I might not get this thing running till the weekend. Gonna put an inline filter in it while i'm at it

Well rivets, it looks like the overhead valve intek's aren't included in that manual, just the side valve equivilant (Quantam?) It still gave me the same idea on how to spot that valves up to adjust them though, find TDC on the compression stroke, then go 1/4" past that. Just have to adjust the rocker arms instead of pulling valves and grinding them or the seats. The carb section did come in handy though. Thanks a bunch for your time and trouble:thumbsup:

Oh, it also should come in handy for diagnosing my charging problem for the electric start. The guy I bought it from said it stopped charging a few years ago, but I assumed that the battery had to be hooked to a charger every once in awhile as the parts diagrams for my mower show an available wall charger. After taking it apart last night to rebuild the carb and get ready to do the valve adjustment, it does indeed have a stator (alternator?) and I did find specs for that in that manual. Thanks again:thumbsup:

So, I finally got around to adjusting the valves today, and they were way off! The exhaust valve was at .014" and intake was .012". I set them to .007" and .005". Unfortunately the gasket I got for the air cleaner/ primer bulb assembly was wrong, so I won't be able to try and start it until I get that.

Its alive! The little mom and pop shop right down the road from my house had the gasket I needed and I got her back together tonight. I pulled and pulled and pulled, thing would not start:smiley_aafz: I pulled the plug, thinking maybe I had hit the primer button to many times, but didn't see any fuel on the plug, just a tiny bit of oil. Put it back together, still nothing. I had added a fuel filter and shut off valve to it when I replaced the fuel line, so I pulled it off at the carb and worked the shut off valve to make sure I was turning it the right way, yup, all was good there. put the line back on and tried again, nothing. Finally I thought, maybe the float needle is stuck in the closed position, as I had replaced the needle and rubber seat when I rebuilt the carb, and maybe some of the grease I lubed the seat with was making the needle stick. I wrapped on the bowl a few times with a wrench and then hit the primer button an finally! I could hear fuel squirting in the carb when I pressed the button in. Gave it a couple pumps and it fired right up! But oh man did it smoke. So much I got worried and shut it off. Looked at the exhaust and there was oil sprayed all over the deck. Checked the oil level, all was good. I started it up again and kept it running till the smoke cleared, then it ran great. I don't know if the previouse owner did something to get all that oil in the exhaust, or if maybe from sitting for almost three years the rings were sticking and then freed up as I ran it, but it seems ok now. But oh man does thing mow! I only had time to do the little patch out front by my sidewalk, it was getting dark, but I don't own another mower that I can fly through the tall grass with as fast as this thing does, and still get a good cut. And the suction is amazing! I have an old aluminum decked snapper, and it can't even hold a candle to this thing. I could hear it sucking up every little stone and pebble. Theres a piece of wood that has been laying in my grass out front that I've run over with my old snapper and my lawn boy, and they never even touched it. This thing sucked it right up and spit it out (made me cringe, should have known better). I usually run my mower over the side walk when I'm done to blow the grass off, but I can't with this thing, anything within almost a foot of the deck gets sucked back under and right out the side discharge shoot again. And this is all with the standard lift blade! I can only imagine what the suction is like with the little bolt on wings! So far I'm more than happy with the 40 bucks I spent to get it. My only gripe is if I put it in 3rd gear or higher, I get a lot of vibration and noise from the rubber drive disk, but it goes away in 1st and 2nd, which is when the most tension is applied to the spring that pulls the disc down against the steel disk on the deck. If I apply a small bit of pressure down on the rubber disk guard, it goes away too, so maybe that spring has just lost some of its tension. Ill work on that over the winter and hopefully get it painted too and get the electric start working, but for now I have grass to mow:thumbsup: Thanks to everyone that offered help and advise. I feel better after making this thing run than I do after fixing a semi truck at work:laughing:
