V-Twin Muffler Interchangeability

For the purists:
Mower: Huskee 54" lawn tractor mower mod. 14AR808K731
Engine: Briggs & Stratton mod. 446777-0316-E1
Date code 040103 YG

The parts breakdown specifies the muffler as MTD p/n 951-0616B (replaces 751-0616)
These are somewhat expensive.
I have seen other V-twin mufflers of different part number such as :

WELLLLLLL it's like this ...... NONE of those numbers are a BRIGGS # s .. the mower manufacturer obviously elected to supply their own, designed to fit a particular model configuration, supplied by a third party entity, therefore you will probably have to research ALL the models with a Briggs twin, NON-VANGUARD engine mfg. by ALL the different makes of mowers that utilized a Brigg's Twin in their lineup, you should be done by Christmas .... 2023 ....... :thumbsup:... :laughing:...:laughing: ........... KARMA strikes from the Warped-Weenie !!

Mufflers are generally part of the mower and not the engine.
Most of the mufflers are fairly close to the same size ( cheapness ) but the header pipes is where most variatios are so they fit in the space & the muffler is out of the way.
If the muffler bolts directly onto the mower they will interchange fairly easily by making up some mounting plates to suit the mower.
If the muffler is welded onto the header pipe it is a bit more difficult.

Thus most muffler fitted to mowers made by MTD will interchange regardless of what name is on the side of the mower and the same applies to AYP mowers.

Turns out a couple of muffler bracket bolts were either loose or missing.
Tightened 1, replaced 1.
All is quiet on the Southern Front.

The simple solutions are the best...........(and cheapest.too!)
