Hi,

Old Toro Wheel horse, 14 hp, Model No 71283, Serial No 240000104?

Does anyone know the make & model of the gearbox (GB), recommended oil & quantity.

The mower is going well, however there is a very slow leak from the GB & today there seemed to be an unusual noise from that direction.

I would like to drain & refill the GB, replace the damaged fan but would like to have fan & the oil before I start.

Your help will be very much appreciated

Most hydrostatic transmissions I work with take 20W50 oil.

Looks like a Hydro Gear they take like Doc says 20W-50 oil.

If it makes any difference "Tractor Data" come up with two diffrent transaxles;

Hydro Gear 321-0650 & 318-0510

Anyone know for sure.

I forgot to add - this is a 17.44 HXL unit

According to Toro the transmission used is a 104-1760 which translates to the hydrogear 310-0510 transaxle. Hydrogear list 79 oz of 20w50 and the fan is not supplied by hydrogear but instead supplied by Toro part number 104-2162

If I put Toro Fan PN 104-2162 into Google, I get Hydro Gear PN 50848 7" 10 blade fan .

Will this fit/do the job?

I really don’t know, probably best to contact HydroGear customer service.
