Hi guys. We just moved into a new house and I mowed the lawn for the first time. Just before cutting the last section, there was a small piece of rebar sticking up under a small patch of dirt, which was not visible until I hit it of course. This caused the mower to make a knocking noise. There are no cracks on the outside of the motor, but I feared a rod may have been bent. I took the blade off (which is now damaged) and started it up without the blade. The mower runs without any knocking noise this time but, it feels like it has less power. So I bought a new blade, attached it, and started it up. The knocking returned again.

If I had a bent rod, wouldn't the knocking noise be there regardless of the blade being attached? I've recently replaced the part pictured below as that was knocking in the past due to the key being sheared off but, after inspection, it's still intact. If this doesn't sound like a rod issue, what are some other possibilities? I believe my father has the tool to do a compression test. Not sure if its for a car or a mower but, I'll check it out and at least try that. Thanks in advance

Disconnect the spark plug wire. tip the mower back with the spark plug up, and then turn the blade to see if it is hitting anything under the deck, or also look to see if the blade wobbles.

I went ahead and just took the head off the motor to do a quick inspection. I spun the flywheel by hand and everything looked fine so I put it all back together. I started it up one last time, blade and all. No knocking.. Not sure what happened but, it's gone thankfully. I'm so relieved it wasn't anything serious.

Thanks for the reply

Possibly a piece of carbon came loose and was causing the knocking noise, and it fell out when you removed the head.

There should be a small washer that goes inside the blade adapter (pictured) in post 1. You need to remove it from the old adapter. Without it you will either have a loose blade (knocking) or you will over tighten the blade bolt, possibly damaging the adapter or blade.
