Top seal leak Duraforce?

I got my first Duraforce 6.5 HP 10323 to quit loping by cleaning the pilot jet. Now I am working on my neighbor''s similar mower. It lopes severely and backfires sharply. I had the flywheel off and it looks to me like the top crankshaft seal may be leaking. Would that let air in? Any other suggestions? Are there reed valves?

Of coarse. It also forces the combustible fuel/air mixture out.
It is a reed valve induction system. But the reeds are not the issue.
Would be a good idea to replace both seals at the same time.
Never run a 2 cycle engine with bad seals. The resultant lean condition will destroy the engine.

I think replacing engine seals,is a little above my pay grade. The old Lawn boy is off to the scrap pile.

Why not turn it into a learning experience?
I (for example) could have both seals replaced and back to mowing in less than an hour.
I'm sure there are others here who could do it faster.
The hardest part is removal of blade adapter.
2 cycle Lawn-Boys are in high demand (I got a bunch along with 2 new short blocks) and are expensive. Check Ebay.
