i think my dad left the hustler ignition key in the on position, when we were dealing with a dead/low battery eariler this year. hour meter shows 400 hours, and last i remember, it should only have around 100. should i just buy a new meter?

A new meter won't be right either.
Just mentally subtract 300 hours from whatever it says. An hour meter isn't all that useful for a homeowner anyway. They seldom reach a maintenance point specified by hours before the mowing season is over.

Turbo,
Just grab you a new hour meter , replace the original and run it until it gets to 300. Then disconnect the second meter and hook up the original. 10 bucks, a bit of time to exchange and problem solved.
