Tips to an amazing lawn

I hold the opinion that it does not actually matter what type of mower one owns because as long the best modes of operation are not employed, it is back to square one.

In respect of this, what is the first step in ensuring the best form of lawn maintenance?

Do as much as you care or have a desire to do...
You are the one that is going to be happy or not with the results... Do what you feel is needed and right... :smile:KennyV

There is a visual difference when a lawn is mowed by a Rotary or Reel mower.
A rotary slashes the Turf(Lawn).....where a Reel cuts the Turf(Lawn)....that is how your lawn looks after it has been cut.

Yes, it's true that you can have a brand new $10,000 mower and do a pretty bad job. Or you can have a $25 walk-behind you got from a garage sale with a sharp blade that will get the job done. So I think everybody has their system for taking care of their lawn. For me, it depends on...

- What "type" of lawn do you want (best in the neighborhood or just kept under control)?

- How much time (and money) are you willing to put into keeping your lawn up?

Some varieties of Lawn cannot be cut with a rotary mower......as they only cut to 1/2 a inch.......where a reel mower can cut as low a 1/4 of a inch.
Nobody is going to spend $10,000 on a lawn mower to cut their domestic lawn.......most people opt for a mower the old cheap and nasty Rotary.:frown:

Indeed it all boils down to technique and the size of the lawn too. In essence-and I tend to agree with this-it is what your desire pushes you to do because if achievable, then the sense of ownership will revert back to yourself.

Satisfaction emanates from personal effort and therein thrives excellence...

I don't think it's the cut that matters. I think it's the fact that you take care of the weeds, trim the trees, fertilize etc. The cut could be done with scissors lol. It's the other stuff that matters more.

way back in 1968 I went through boot camp at Ft.Leonardwood in Missouri. They marched us out to this field and told us we would be cutting grass today.I looked around and wondered were the heck were the mowers.Well the Drill Instructors gave us each a pair of scissors and told us to get to cutting. To make a long story short, it's harder than you think to cut grass with a pair of scissors. russ

You need to treat your lawn like a real person........Feed it (Fertilise),Water it when required and give it a Haircut(mow lawn)........Short back and sides please.
Medicine(Weed killer) and lots of sunlight( alleviates Depression).......and a Vitamin pill(Nitrogen Urea)
Then get kids to play on it!

Ha ha...
That reminds me when I went in, in '64... The DI told us it was labor day and we were going to labor... marched us to this big mound of 'goat head' stickers... and told us to remove all the stickers ... but not disturb the plants... he would be back and run barefoot in it to check our work... Ha
needless to say we removed all the stickers and the plants were all in fine shape...
The military has its ways ...:smile:KennyV

Wow, using a pair of scissors? That must have been a torture. I kinda agree with taking care of your lawn, just like you would do to a human being.

We have many barbers and each is unique and that is what makes their clients stand out. That analogy is on point!

Weed killer?
I agree with the rest. A long time ago I worked a summer for a horticulturist/landscaper. The two things I recall from that job is how to mix a Harvey Wallbanger and never ever use weed killer, weed & feed etc.
Not 100% sure he was right but my sister's neighbor used weed & feed one year on his lawn and volunteered to treat my sister's yard. It was never the same after that.

There are ways to not use weed killer and have a beautiful lawn it is a process. First spring and fall cut super low. In the summer cut at 3 to 3.5 in tall promotes thick turf with no room for weeds this takes a couple years so in the mean time pull weeds with roots and use warm vinegar water on the foalage I have been ddoing this on lawns for 3 years now and the results have been out standing. Now as for my customers who insist on using herbicides I rinse my shoes and equipment off at there house as to not spread weed killer or seeds. Same with lawns where peopledo nothing and its.just a field of weeds
