Thistles

My nemesis is thistles. The are pop up like crazy in the spring, new ones every day. I try to pull them up before they form seeds. Any recommendations on herbicides?

Try some Round Up. It will kill just about anything.

The only way I know to control thistles is by digging them up before they seed, make sure you get the roots too so they won't come back.

Including your grass.

I use Curtail M. It knocks the thistles and dandelions down hard.

You've got the right idea about getting them before they form seeds, but I'm not sure what would kill them that wouldn't also kill your grass. Have you tried boiling water? It would also kill the grass but you would be more likely to get rid of the thistles this way-eco friendly.

Right, I live in the country so we have plenty of very invasive weeds that like to take over and I hate to use chemicals and stuff cause of all the effort I have put into the garden. I usually just dig them up slowly.

This is the first time I heard about boiling water.

I also try to dig up the weeds. It will hurt my grass but they will survive. I love the rain but I hate thistles that grow after the rain.

Just wondering where you get that curtail m? Is that something you get from the elevator that farmers get only, and you need a license to apply it ? Or can the public get it? I live in Minnesota to i'm in the Southwestern corner of the state This September i'm planning on spraying my lawn with 2-4-D ester and see if that helps,i have corn field and soybean field right next to my lawn so i don't want to harm his crops either. I live on a acreage. thanks

Sorry this is almost 2 years late. I didn't see this question.

Yes. Curtail M is something you get at the elevator/fertilizer plant. I do not know if you need a license to apply it or not. I figure if I can get it, I can apply it on my own property.

I also live in a rural area with acreage and will only spray my lawn on a dead calm day so there is no drifting of chemical to my new tree rows.

I use the round-up in just a small hand bottle sprayer on one thistle at a time, just kills the thistle if your carefull.
