Synthetic oil weight preferances

Mobil 1 - 10 W 30 is what I plan to use when my 8 hour break in time is up.

The dealer suggested a straight 30 weight petroleum base once the break in time is up, but when I queried him about using a synthetic oil he said that would be a good choice also. He again recommended a straight 30 weight, but there's a problem. Synthetic oil doesn't come in a straight 30 weight. At least Mobil 1 doesn't as I actually called them to confirm this and yes, that's the case - no straight 30 weight in Mobil 1 synthetic.

The dealer said that 10 W 30 would be fine, but looking at a recommended oil for various temperatures chart (regarding outside temperatures) exceeding 95 or so degrees and over - the recommendation shows 40 weight.

So, what do you guys think?

Using Mobil 1 10W-30 should not be a problem in anyway. Just realize that the viscosity is a little lighter and you will notice A small increase in oil consumption when using a multi-weight oil. Just make sure that you are diligent in checking before each use.

In looking at previous threads regarding synthetic oil, I now have a couple more questions:

Some folks seem to think you have to wait 50 hours to switch to synthetic. Why? The dealer said after the 8 hours break in, it'd be fine to replace the oil with synthetic - no waiting 50 hours.

I read on this forum you should wait 50 hours to let the engine break in with petroleum based oils. But again, I ask why? What's negatively going to happen if you change to synthetic after the first 8? And I'm not arguing against waiting, I simply want to know the logic in waiting until 50 hours of petroleum based oils is used.

Also, I just read about Rotella T Synthetic T6. Some folks seem to think this is even better than Mobil 1 - 10 W 30, but I don't know why?

I'm an old fart, so synthetics are not in my shop. I've always been a fan of a good petro-based oil changed at regular intervals. I've seen units where synthetics are used and folks think they don't have to follow a routine schedule, bad results. I know that synthetics are good, but still can't justify the cost when I can get the same results with the cheaper oil. Just my thoughts.

I've always considered synthetic oil overkill and most all manuals will tell you too use a petroleum based oil during the break-in period so the rings will properly seat. I use nothing but Mobil 5000 10 w 30 in all my mowers from day one, during the break-in period ( first 50 hrs ) I change oil and filter three times. After I change oil and filter every 50 hours.

I use carquest brand 10w 30 change every 50 ish hours unless its clean at the 50 mark then i will wait another 10-20 checking alot. I see no point in changing clean oil when it isnt low and very nice looking on my papertowel :smile:
