Can't get anything on shaft to hold it to remove the nut

use an old belt wrapped around it and anchored to something on the frame to keep the pulley and shaft from spinning. If you don't have an old belt use a rope strong enough it won't break. You run the belt or rope so it crosses over itself and tightens down on itself in the direction you want to turn the nut on the shaft.
Cut the nut with a hacksaw . Use another hacksaw blade against the shaft to space the cut a blade thickness from the shaft . If 1 cut doesn't loosen it enough make a second cut .

Please the post the model information of the tractor so we can look at exactly what you're working with.

Should be 13AN689G766 with the mtd CVT transaxle. Use a nut splitter to remove the nut being careful not the damage the shaft threads. Even hen it is going to be a pain as the nut is a flanged nut.
