Steel camshaft for Kawasaki FD440V

Can I use the steel camshaft from an FD501V to replace the plastic camshaft in my FD440V?

Unfortunately, Kawasaki stopped making these steel camshafts available four years ago. There are no new ones available and none are being made by the aftermarket. From the service manual for the FD440 and FD 501, the dimensions for the end ods and love diameters are the same.
