The mower had a weak battery the last few years and I was having to jump it each time I used it. This year, I tried to jump it and it wouldn't start and the started just kept on spinning without engaging the flywheel. Once I removed the key, it still continued to spin. At the time it was hooked up to a charging unit.
I replaced the battery and upon connecting the wires to the final post, it tried to start without the key even in the ignition. It sounded good like it would probably start if I held the cable in place. I completely removed the ignition switch and it still did the same thing.
I removed the solenoid, thinking that maybe it somehow was providing a constant voltage regardless of the ignition and was able to hook the battery without it trying to run the starter.
Any ideas what the issue is? Solenoid?

That is usually the solenoid. the contacts have welded themselves together and are not releasing.
