Starter gear not raising high enough to engage the flywheel

Hi,

My 12 year old rider mower, 18.5HP, 42" will not crank . The mower kind of chugged a bit and then died on a hill. Would not start. The engine seemed frozen and I freed it up. But then all everything did was spin. I replaced the solenoid and the starter gear and got a new battery. It seems like the starter gear raises up the shaft but not enough to engage the flywheel. Is the clutch drive supposed to raise up some also?
Would really appreciate some help.

Thanks.

Shumanfoo, come on mate, give us a go.
There are at least 30 different engines & starter combinations you could be talking about.
So lets start with the make & model of the engine and the model number of the mower would not hurt either.
Did you ring up the parts shop and tell, them "send me a starter for a 12year old 18.5 Hp ?

Easy Bert. He said he was new. he he he he he

Shamufoo, you're saying the starter gear isn't even touching the flywheel, when you turn it over?

I’m betting he’ll have to change the starter bendix drive agai, probably told the parts guy the same as he posted for us and did not receive the right one.

Surely he took the old starter with him, to match it up.
