Spiders

Since my Avatar is a spider, I figured I would start a thread about them.

I seen him in my little wishing well in front yard and wished I could have had him as a pet! :laughing: His name was Bob the Spider. That was 2 years ago. Last year, I had a black and white one, on my birch tree but didn't get a great picture of him sadly. Every year I look for spiders now.

Seen a spiny orb weaver on my one mowing job last year too which was pretty cool but he was only a baby so really tiny and didn't have a camera on me at the time! :frown:

What a odd sport, a lot of people hate spiders. I guess it is something new to look for. They have to be good for the environment killing insects

I did drywall work on the shore of Sandusky Bay (Near Toledo, OH) in college and we were plagued by spiders. Even had a little ditty:

Spider spider on the wall
Ain't you got no sense at all
Don't you know that wall's getting plastered
Now get off the wall
You silly ... spider

The scary part about this type of spider is it's blazing speed. It can get across your living room ceiling in less than 1 second....yea! you'll find your wife hiding in the bathroom shower until you convince her it's been eliminated.
This one is about 2.5 inches leg tip to leg tip. So you can hear it run across the floor. It doesn't make a web...don't need a web when you can run faster than most insects can fly.

We've got at least 2 different kinds here (orb weavers). One we call a banana spider that's almost as big as the one above and a slightly smaller version. Both are very ornate, I have pics but not handy. Here is a picture of a Lynx spider. I took this in the garden, these are quite common here.

We've got at least 2 different kinds here (orb weavers). One we call a banana spider that's almost as big as the one above and a slightly smaller version. Both are very ornate, I have pics but not handy. Here is a picture of a Lynx spider. I took this in the garden, these are quite common here.

I detest spiders. I was bitten by a rather large orb weaver that had taken up residence between the legs of my porch chair, unbeknownst to me. As I was sitting, enjoying a cold beer, something stung the side of my hand and I let out a howl. I jumped up and it was scurrying across the porch and my neighbor asked, "Did that thing just bite you!!?" I nodded in the affirmative and chased the traitor over the railing and down into the grass, where I found it trying furiously to get away. I stomped on it and was victorious. Bittersweet victory though, as the next day there was a lump the size of a golf ball on the side of my hand. I hate spiders and my new house is so close to Lake Huron that there is spiders all over it, including Brown Recluse that are downright dangerous to all, and deadly to my wife. Needless to say my house is sprayed twice a year minimum, and there are electronic bug repellers all over it. Seems to be far better than when we first bought it.

But I sure as hell hate getting under it.

Yeah the Brown Recluse are bad ones. Don't think I ever seen one here yet.
