Saw this comment from twall on a post from 2011:

As a piece of trivia, the turtle's name beside the Snapper logo? SAM.

Stands for: Snapper American Made
 
Years ago someone at Snapper came up with a sales slogan to encourage dealers to buy and sell more Snappers. "A turtle doesn't move forward unless he sticks his neck out" or something close to that.
