I have excess clearance in steering gears. Is there a shim, or adjustment?

Post Craftsman Model # from under seat, you need to replace steering Sector & Pinion Gears at bottom of steering shaft. Grease both gears by hand.

Depending on the model, there is a bearing/bushing where the steering shaft goes through the frame (I assume this is to keep the wear off the frame.) Many times, the bearing has worn, which can cause loose steering and slippage when turning. If replacing, go ahead and get the new bolt and washer that secures the shaft on the bottom-side of the frame. You are looking at about $17 for all three parts (bearing, washer and bolt.)
