I have a John Deere mower that used to have a single cylinder Briggs & Stratton 18.5HP. The engine on it went due to overheating from mouse nesting. I found a 21HP Briggs & Stratton Intek Twin Cylinder as a replacement. The replacement engine model and type is: 407577-0284-E1. Mounting, pulleys, electrical, hood size, exhaust, and fuel hookups are all manageable with the conversion.

The one issue I'm having is the throttle/choke cable. The mower itself has a single lever that operates both the throttle and choke simultaneously. However, the new engine has an independent choke and throttle configuration on the front of the engine. One way to fix this issue is to install an aftermarket choke lever under the steering wheel. This is not preferable as the pre-existing throttle lever is designed with the choke engagement in the most-forward position.

Any thoughts to correct this issue? It seems the two options would be to replace the carburetor assembly with one that a single cable can operate a choke and throttle together. The second being a replacement throttle lever with two cables coming off it, with one operating the choke when the lever is pushed forward all the way.

Yes go with the separate choke cable install... You have the connection plate on your engine already for the choke....

There are quite a few vids on you tube for that add on....

In fact I think Boo Boo on here has a link for that if i'm not mistaken.... Or just google it... Google is your buddy...........

The carburetor/throttle/choke plates are currently set up to accept a manual choke. I am not looking to convert from an automatic choke to manual; the engine is already designed to be operated manually. I'd like to convert from manual to automatic so that the throttle and choke are operated by one lever.

Your twins carburetor is the problem, its not designed for a single throttle/choke setup, its either auto-choke with a separate throttle cable or a manual choke (separate cable) and a separate throttle cable ...... the most recent models MIGHT have that type of set-up you desire, but I'm not familiar with any .. the combination choke/throttle (single cable) were used exclusively on the SINGLE cylinder engine carburetors.... also a minor PITA to adjust the first time...

You can still use your combo choke/throttle lever as it is, for just your throttle, readjust the cable for your engine, moving it full fwd will be full throttle, it wont affect your choke, as you need to install a separate cable for that ... unless you want to spend more money and convert to auto-choke

Yes Briggs V Twins use a single throttle/choke cable on some of their engines....... You will have to change out all the throttle plate and linkages though..... Briggs makes 3 different kinds of throttle plates for their V Twins....

If you look your engine up and go to the carb section it shows the different ones.... I don't know which one yours takes so you will have to go to a Briggs dealer or a Lawn mower shop and look at the different V Twin engines.....

One I worked on a while back was a Zero Turn Craftsman... With the setup you want..........
