Shift Linkage falling off. Ariens 960460054 / 21 HP / 42 Inch

Hi. First post here.

This afternoon the shift linkage on my automatic tranmission started falling off. I can pop it back on but if I push it too far forward it just falls off again. When this happens the mower keeps going forward and I am unable to put it in neutral or reverse since the linkage has fallen off.

I have looked under the mower and pushed it forward and it appears the shifter is not able to move forward (down). I can move it with my hand and I can feel the transmission going into reverse and forward.

When I push the shifter forward I can see that the linkage stops moving since the shifter arm on the transmission quits moving (going down) and so the linkage slides to the left and falls off this shift level.

Any ideas? Is this a tranmission problem? Or did something fall off the shift lever that keeps the linkage from falling off? There are no threads for a nut and no hole for a cotter pin.

Ok. I just figured out that I don't have a hydrostatic transmission. It is an automatic transmission.

Well, it is hydrostatic, but look at this diagram, and figure out what is popping out of where, and what is broke or missing.
