I would definitely go with an Echo. I would go with the PB-500H or "higher": Leaf Blowers, Handheld Blowers, Backpack Blowers, Quiet Yard Blowers | ECHO USA. But Stihl would be good, too. A lot of people say it is better to get a tube-mounted throttle, not a hip-mounted throttle. One of the Echo's with a tube-mounted throttle is the PB-500T.

its there any reason why one would pay $50 more to get the Stihl BR 600?
what if any benefits vs the 550?
on a side note, I like how they look.
there isnt really a difference, i have used both and they work the same. the 550 is somewhat lighter i think. but the magnum has better padding. go with the 550
On the Stihl website it says the 550 is 21.8 lbs. and the 600 Magnum is 21.6 lbs.: STIHL Backpack Leaf Blowers - Professional and Homeowner Use Backpack Blowers | STIHL USA.

Yeah, I really could use a blackpack blower, but I'm building up my arm muscles!

Yea definitely arm muscles for a hand held, and what's so funny is you'll have to start over again with your back and shoulder muscles with a backpack, it takes a little getting use to carrying 23 lbs around on your back.

Plus, when you pull the trigger it pushes the backpack/engine to the left because of the high power. that also feels pretty different.
OK good to know...so you'll fall backwards AND to the left!:laughing:
pretty much! thats what happened to me the first time i used one! i almost did fall
I always wondered, do lawn care people have worse backs when they are older because of using backpack blowers?I don't know!
If i come home from working for a guy and i do is blow leaves with a backpack blower, my arm is more tired then my back. actually my whole upper body. but now my back. as long as you keep it strapped tight to your back.

I don't believe so. Using a backpack isn't any different than anything else that you do, like riding a bicycle or lifting weight, your muscles are going to compensate for the activity that you pursue. If anything your back muscles should improve.
OK...when I come back from a big job my WHOLE body hurts. My upper body from the blower and my lower body from pushing my mower to and from the property, and walking around the property with my mower.
I believe the 600 is lighter and more powerful than the 550.
We've been using a Kawasaki backpack blower for a year now, picked it up at EXPO+GIE last year, and we love it.
I've heard a lot about the Kawasaki blowers and I'd really like to try one out. If there as good as there mower engines they should be something special. I wished my dealer carried them.
lawn mower fanatic said:I have definitely heard of Kawasaki engines, but not of their power equipment until this year. It would be nice to see how it compares to other brands, since their engines are nice.
Ric--you could find the closest dealer to you HERE: Kawasaki.
The closest Kawasaki dealer to me is 37 miles away!
I borrowed my buddies Stihl 550 and after I used it I knew I had to have one, My friend owns a Husky/Stihl dealer and he gave me a real good price on a Stihl BR 600 Mag, it works great, I only have a couple tanks though it and it seems to be getting better with every tank. I do not notice much of a difference between the 550 and the 600, The 550 is used on a Golf course and has seen a lot of use and still works great.
I don't think Either the BR 550 or 600 are loud, They seem to very smooth running.
Got the BR550 and love it, now I never have to sweep dirt or shovel snow.
God I love this machine.
note: 1st blower I ever bought and used
Instead of a back pack I use a 25cc Poulan Pro. 200 MPH and 430 CFM. I bought mine in early August and have run several tanks of gas through it with 0 problems. Starts easy and moves some air. I have used it to blow driveways, sidewalks, and moving leaves our of fences and so forth to be mulched with my mower. Just a thought. Several people told me that Poulan stuff was cheap junk but if it does the job and lasts it is worth looking into. I caught mine on sale for $89 although they are like $119 I think now in most places.
jekjr,
Is that Poulan fairly light(in case my wife wanted to use it for blowing grass clippings off the driveway & sidewalk)? Also, being in Tennessee, we don't have much need for clearing snow but I am interested in getting a "gutter kit" for blowing the leaves out of the gutters on my house & garage which is a major chore for me now using the "ladder/manual" method!! I've been told that these are more designed for the hand-held blowers versus the backpack blowers but don't know that to be a fact. And like you, I don't see any need for me to spend $300-$400 for a fancy backpack blower when a $120 handheld will do the job(s) I need a blower for. I do want something that will last, is easy to use(lightweight for the wife) and will get the job done. The main reason I was considering the backpack-type blower was for the wife. Any more advice/suggestions for what will meet my needs?????

You may want to check out this thread, I just bought this one for the wife a Stihl BR 200.

Did you forget to include a link to the thread? I think this is the thread you are talking about: http://www.lawnmowerforum.com/commercial-residential-lawn-mowing/13094-stihl-br-200-br-blower.html. (Most of the info about the blower after Ric purchased it is on pages 2 and 3.)
lmf,
Thanks for the link...I think I had seen that thread earlier on the forums, but I've been away from the forums for a while, slept several times and just jumped on this thread about blowers:0)
ric,
Thanks, as that does seem to be a very good backpack blower for the wife but you mentioned several times to some users on that thread that if you were wanting to move leaves to go with the bigger 350 or 500 models. As I said earlier "my" main use of a blower would be to clean the leaves out of the gutters with a gutter kit tube attachment. Cleaning them by hand on a ladder is for the birds!!! So, in your opinion, would the Stihl 200 be able to use a gutter tube extension and have enough power for getting gutters full of leaves cleaned out? The price ain't bad and I would hesitate spending < $300 on a good unit. I'm certain the wife would love the BR200 for cleaning the driveway & sidewalk I just want to be certain what I get will clean the gutters as well. Of course I'm not 100% sure the Poulan hand-held mentioned earlier would handle the gutter cleaning either.
To my knowledge the gutter kits are not available with any of the Stihl back pack units.

ric/lmf,You are correct....the gutter cleaning kits are only made for the handheld units: Frequently Asked Questions about STIHL Blowers | STIHL USA.

But you could always make one for a backpack blower...I am assuming this guy made one himself since Stihl does not make any kits for backpack blowers.
Echo also makes a kit.

A quick gander at the Redmax website lists the GK-280 gutter kit as a "Backpack And Handheld Blower Attachment" in their online brochure. I couldn't find anything that specifically said it would/wouldn't work on a Backpack model, so I guess I'd need to check with a dealer.

Thanks for the advice guys!!! From a consumer perspective, I don't really understand why Stihl limits the gutter kits to the hand-held models only. And the mention by lmf that Echo makes a gutter kit led me to check out their website. Lo & behold when checking their blower accessories it states that the gutter kit 99944100025 as "RAIN GUTTER CLEANING KIT (ALL ECHO BLOWERS WITH POSI-LOC PIPES EXCEPT PB-770H/T). The PB770H/T is their 'top" backpack model, but all of the backpack models I looked at had the "Posi-Loc pipes" on them which tells me the gutter kit would work. Their entry-level tube-mounted throttle backpack blower(PB-500T) @ $329 seems to have good specs(465cfm/195mph/50cc engine/61oz fuel tank/5 yr warranty) although it is kinda heavy compared to the Stihls(21.8lbs versus 12.6lbs @ $270 for the Stihl BR200). Sure wish the Stihl backpack blowers would handle a gutter kit:0( I am going to continue researching and check out the Redmax brand suggested.
P.S.

Ya know I'll bet you could manufacture something and make that Echo gutter kit work with a Stihl.
