motor ran good last used now wont start starving for gas. installed new carb. fuel pump is fine motor will run with throttle fully on and choked fully on and pour gas in carb. motor will run good but will stop if chock pushed off or holding governor slower. compression 160. I have repaired mowers a long time and never had this condition before - motor is a Kohler 23 HP

That sounds like a big vacuum leak.
Any vent hoses knocked off? The carb gasket was the right size? No bolts bottomed out before things were seated completely?

Too lean. Common causes...
- clogged jets due to leaving ethanol fuel in float bowl during storage
- water in the float bowl
- clogged fuel filter
- big air leak (loose fitting, missing hose, missing gasket, etc)
- fuel pump not working
- trash in float bowl blocking jets
Things like this that add too much air or too little fuel. Something is upsetting the ratio of fuel-to-air.
