Replacing rings on my GXV120

All,
I am ready to order a new ring set for my GXV120 engine on my HR 214SX mower and want to get the latest style for this engine. I am addressing the worn out ring issue because of the smoke on startup. I thought I read somewhere there is a new style 3 piece oil ring that performs better than the original one piece. Is this a true statement? I do not need to oversize, just the standard bore as the cylinder is fine. I want to make sure I get the correct style and am sure someone can point me to the right place to get them. A part number would be great too. I want to replace the oil seals while I am in there too.
My engine S/N is GXV120 1155778. This one was made in Japan.

Thanks in advance.

Jeff

you will need to locate your engine model number.

you will need to locate your engine model number.
the numbers I wrote above are directly off of the block. Are there more?

Correct - the 3pc is much better, and I believe that Honda has updated all thier parts to that style.

While the specific model # is best, when I was work8ng on my GXV140, I found that all variants are currently using ths same part number, so not sure if there is a difference on the GXV120 . . . Engine info should be stamped in the block casting, and the mower model and serial will likely take you where you need to be as well.

Honda engine part diagrams on their push mowers are tied to the mower model and serial number. But sometimes the engine model, prefix, serial number, and suffix will pop up for the mower it was used on.

Ok, let me get this straight. I must be slow in my old age. LOL

My mower is a HR 214 SX. On a stamp on the deck is HR 214 EC. Plus there is another tag with 1045238 embossed on it. That with the serial number on the engine stated in my first post is all I have.

I believe this is the diagram for your engine. It shows the single piece oil control ring with no supercession to a newer number

Hello,

I ordered rings for my GXV140 from parts tree.com, and it came with the newer 3 piece oil control ring.

W ill this ring set fit my GXV 120? I want the most superseded part for my mower. If it is a known issue with the old style oil ring I do not want to reinstall the same old style oil ring if possible.
I thought I saw someone on here did actually find a three piece for a GXV 120.

Honda laser stamps their engine numbers in the side of the block. With those numbers you will be able to locate the exact part numbers you need.

Although they do, many of the walk behind mowers engines are still only reference in the mower's IPL only as you don't find them listed those engine numbers under engine only ipls especially older models.

Have yet to find one in the last ten years that doesn’t. Just have to look for them. Have seen some clones that have Honda parts, but are not Honda engines.

After my phone call this morning to Parts Tree, they are confirming the ring set is the 13010-ZE6-013 as the latest variation. Still not a three piece oil seal like I was hoping for. Maybe I am just imagining such a thing.

Some time back there was another person looking for parts for their honda engine on the honda pushmower, and I asked for the engine numbers and another member Honda Robert (worked for Honda) or something like that correctly me and said that to use the honda equipment model and serial number not the engine model number to look up engine parts for those items.

I have come across engines on Honda equipment that didn't show the engine model number in their system had to use the Honda equipment model number to get engine parts. Have had a couple that when the engine model number was references pulled up the diagram for the piece of equipment so sometimes it works both ways.

This is exactly what PartsTree had to do, they used my model number HR 214 SX to find the part.

Hello,

No, GXV140 rings won't work on a GXV120.

Jeff

Start here, even if they would not be the vendor of your choice to purchse: https://www.planopower.com/oem-parts select "Honda", "Lawnmower", and then (based on your info), HR-214SXA#1, and then "Piston" and check the engine serial number range for the parts against your block. Note that *every* ring set part number has been superceded (some many times!).

(For what it's worth, I looked at all three serial number ranges, and they all point to ring set 13010-ZE6-013. This is consistent with my experience with the GXV-140 - the piston/cylinder is common to all, and only options such as PTO, etc. vary . . . Oh, and that part no. is for std - they also list oversize, and often other brand alternates . . .)

Thanks. I have found the part number you referenced above is consistently the one for my application. Must be correct.
