Can the front oil seal be changed without disassembling the block? For example, with the flywheel off, can the old seal simply be extracted, and the new one inserted?

If you have a clear path, I don't see why not. Watch out for possible snap ring. Just don't mark up the crank shaft. If you don't have a seal remover, and providing your seal does not have a metal shell, you can poke a hole in the old one, screw in a small sheet metal screw in the hole and pull on that screw to remove. Make note of the depth that the old one was at, because on some engines, you can press in too far if it doesn't have a shoulder to stop it from going in too far.

Thanks, will give it a try.
