Replaced belt but it slips again

I have a Craftsman push weed-wacker. The belt that drives the cutter was slipping so I replaced it.
It was snug and worked well for a couple hours of running.
But now, it is not tight on the spindle any more, and it won't spin the cutting head.
The spindles on both ends (engine and cutter head) are solidly bolted, so I dont think the problem is that the distance between the spindles changed.
I don't smell any belt burning....so I am at a loss.

I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks,
John

I'll go way out on a limb and say there has to be some adjustment somewhere. Split pulley, slotted holes in the frame not readily visible, somewhere somehow. But could it be a pulley slipping on the shaft? Sheared key or something?

Do you still have the old belt?
if so can you take some photos of it ?

The section I have circled in red is what you need to check and make sure the belt is routed correctly. I circled in green the spring that may not be connected or broken. Check both things and let us know what you find.

My experience with these machines is that the tension spring gets weak over time. I'd replace the spring.
