Pulley idler went out on my craftsman 46". I ordered a new one and put it on with a new keeper, belt, idler. My question is how tight should I tighten the nut? If it's too tight the pulley doesn't spin. Mower is a Sears Craftsman 22 hp electric start 46" mower automatic garden tractor. Serial #100200A010684. It is old but has been a good one. Model # is 917273080

Seeing that you have an electric pto, the deck belt tension is preset with the spring on the tensioner arm. Is it possible that you have the pulley installed upside down. The underside of the pulley should have a bearing extension which will not allow the pulley to contact the tensioner arm. Sometimes you must remove this extension from the old pulley. If installed properly you should be able to tighten the nut very tight, but the pulley should spin.
