not sure wich peerless you have but did you position the two axle bearings in their seat?there should be a little "nub" on the axle shaft bearing that fits in the halves

Make sure the bronze bushing nibs are setting in the recess in the lower case. Some of the trannys also had a piece that slid around the differential gear. If it isn't seated won't allow case to go together. if you try to force it will will crack the case.
I had one not too long ago I replaced the shift keys in and had a problem with the cases lining back up. don't know if its the same problem yer having, but I had the ring gear not lined up properly.
