overseeding

i want to overseed a small portion of my lawn, roughly 550 square feet. there are a lot of bare spots, and some grass blades have these weird buds on the tips of them. i adjusted my lawn mower to the lowest setting and once i was down mowing, the lawn looked a lot cleaner.

my question is, do i have to rake the existing grass with a rake or dethatch rake? some areas are bare, and some areas are fine. if i don't, is the next step to spread the seed and fertilizer, or do i apply the topsoil first to the lawn? or seed/fertilizer first, then topsoil?

If there is some grass there i would just scratch the ground a little with a rake to loosen up the soil and rake old grass trimming up so the seed get into the ground . Put grass seed down then ether run a roller over the newly seeded ground to push the seed into the ground or spread some top soil over the ground to cover up the seed.Then you need to keep it moist for a few weeks with water. This should be done in the spring or late fall, it's to hot out now to start a lawn pretty hard to keep moist to get it to grow and once you get it growing you have to do a lot of watering. Even hard to get some spot seeding done in this heat now, lot easier to do when the weather is in that rainy season time of year, and cooler temps. Fall works good to to do it just before it snows then the snow help get the seed into the ground Put the seed on pretty thick the birds like it to some times to ,and will eat some of your seed. Get the right seed for sunny or shady area to. Good luck:tongue:
