I have an old Bolens Rototiller with a 5 hp Briggs engine.

It has been just stopping during use and would restart easily.
Yesterday I filled the tank with gas and started it.
Gas began spurting out of the gas cap!!!!!!!!
So, I took out about 1/2 of the gas and restarted it.
Seemed to run ok, so I started to 'till the garden.
It stopped a couple of times and restarted.
Then, I was not able to start it.

Any ideas where to start looking to correct this problem???

gas spirting out of the cap is because the washer which forms part of a sort of one way breather has fallen out, broken up.
So it is new gas cap time.

For the rest we will need to know which model you have.
It should be stamped into the engine cover near the head.
Model no and code please

On the side is: 130290 0141-03 73022807 (Engine Model #, Engine Type, Engine Code)

Tore the unit apart today.
Points were not aligned so I aligned them and set gap at 0.020".
Used business card to set coil spacing. Made sure all surfaces were clean, used light sandpaper.
Checked for spark and there was spark as I grounded the plug and pulled starter rope.
Sprayed starting fluid into cylinder via plug hole....still no start!!!

Pulled carb and tank and checked tank...very clean.
Put it back on.

No start.?????

Check the timing key in the flywheel.
They are zinc and brake easily so the magneto ends up being out of sync with the engine

UPDATE:
So here is where I ended up.
I put in a carb rebuild kit AND a new set of Briggs Points & Condenser.
Also new spark plug.
Left the original coil in and set it with a business card.
Also checked the key and it was OK, but I replaced it anyway.

Result:
Engine starts on the first pull and runs great.
I expect the problem was the condenser from the way it was acting.

So, back to work.
