Engine on my Murray rider is 15.5 HP Briggs, vertical shaft. The automatic compression release on cam shaft was broken. I removed the engine, cleaned everything up, replaced the cam shaft, installed new gaskets and re-installed the engine. Oil is leaking (considerably) from some where underneath the oil sump. I have not, yet, removed the engine again. The oil is not leaking at the gasket between the sump and block. Could the leak be from around the sump bolts to block. Bolts were torqued according to specifications in my Briggs repair manual BUT I did not use any type of sealant abound the bolts. My Briggs repair manual did not call for use of sealer on any bolt. I also did not replace the oil seal of the sump at the PTO shaft.
Any help will be appreciated.

Thanks, and we are finally getting lots of rain here in Stephenville Texas,

Well I'm assuming its not the crankshaft seal?? Another thing to use when doing the sump gasket is liquid gasket as well(dirko).

Why are you assuming it's not the crank seal? I think that's what he called the PTO shaft and he didn't replace it. I think that might be the leaker. gregjo1948

It was the crank shaft seal. I removed the engine, turned it upside down and the lip of the seal was rolled outward from the shaft. I replaced the seal and now have the engine mounted back on mower.
thanks for all the advice.
