Go to Sears, Walmart, Home Depot, Lowes, etc. This time of year many places are selling what are called floor sample or demo or reconditioned push mowers. I saw a 6.5 hp self-propelled Craftsman at the local store last week, list was $399.99, clearance price was $229.00. it looked barely used, if at all.
Maybe you need to look at the specifications and I agree with you that the brand does not matter as such. Go for something that will not leave you regretting after purchase.
