Hi Everyone, I'm new here so have some mercy ! I have a Craftsman II 12HP 38" cut riding mower. The tires are good (even have spares), new starter, new mandrel etc problem is the engine is blown. Do I invest in an engine or should I sell for parts ? Where do I get an engine cheap ? My neighbor is capable of installing but I don't have too much to invest.

I tried Craig's list in my area to no avail -- mower or engine

look for a lawn mower salvage yard and stall a used engine.

If you are really attached to your more, and want to use it for many years buy a new engine from Honda, and modify your tractor to fit. A new Briggs & Stratton clone will run you $300 and new Honda will run around $475.

Thanks so much for your help but right now both are out of my price range.

I bought a Robbins/Subaru engine as a replacement for the B&S on our rototiller last year. I have to tell you, that R/S engine is the highest quality small engine I've ever seen in my life. It is truly astounding. I bought it new, in the box, from a seller on E-Bay. It cost me $150. It started on the first pull the first time I tried it, it has started on the first pull every time since. Plenty of power, idles down to just about zero RPM, reasonably quiet with no rattles too. Oh, and did I mention it actually comes with a real Owner's Manual that actually gives useful information?

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I noticed you mentioned Robbins/Subaru engines, which would mean the initials would be RS...

My Mountfield walk behind mower has an engine with "RS100" written on it. The 100 stands for 100CC, but I was wondering what the RS stood for. Would it be Robbins/Subaru ?

How Blown is Blown? I have re-ringed several engines at low cost and have great results. Rings and gaskets will run around 30-50 dollars depending where you purchase them.
Good Luck
