Hi all. I'm new to this board and in search of a mower that will mimic the striping that is posted in the picture that I have attached. I currently have my lawn professionally mowed, but I've become dissatisfied with their services and wish to do it myself. My lawn is about 10,000 sq. ft. My main concern is to mimic the striping they create because I feel it adds that wow factor to your lawn. I have been looking at the Ariens wide area walk behind as can been seen here: Ariens Wide Area Walk Lawn Mower Review - YouTube

Cost is not a huge concern, but I want to get the most bang for your buck and since my lawn is still under 1/2 acre, I don't want to unnecessarily spend more money than I have to.

Suggestions?

Since your lawn is decently sized, you should get a self-propelled mower, maybe even a riding mower

For a self-propelled push-mower, I would go for a 5hp John Deere, but that's just my say. Mine has no problems

And as for the stripes, all you need to do is go back and forth  It looks to good to be easy doesn't it?

Also that video, that lawnmower looks perfect for your yard, but also look at the top comment

A used, late-model Simplicity riding mower would be my suggestion. World class striping results are built in to this mower.:biggrin:

Thanks for the suggestions. I still like the wide area walk behind style. I can't seem to find any with a striping kit though....

Striping occurs when you change the direction the way the grass leans. I have seen some bolt old pieces of rubber belting on the back of the mower to get this affect.
Good Luck.

If you like the Ariens, get it... There are several other makes of powered walk behind.
You will most likely have to fabricate your own striping kit... I have seen it done with belting like wcpost said... also with small rollers.
What ever you use, it will have to allow for turns and reversing... A little looking at other walk behinds and some planning ... you will be able to stripe your area easily...

BTW... striping works best on Long grass... be sure the mower you buy is able to cut grass as Long as it is now cut... some of the lesser mowers will not let you raise as high as you may need... :smile:KennyV

I watched a program on TV this past spring. The were interviewing the grounds keeper at Fenway Park (you know the Red Sox). Anyway, he indicated that some of the fancy work is done with a water hose as already said they bend the grass for the effects. He also said that they only use Simplicity tractors because of the rollers on the back side of the deck also aiding in bending the grass.

How about a Toro with a striping system? Toro self propelled.
