My new to me Snapper

It's a model 3081 has the 8hp BS motor. I bought it today for $55 locally. How do you think I did? It currently does not run :( but hopefully I'll be able to fix that. This is my first project of this magnitude, so I'm going to have alot of questions as I move along.

Anyone have any tips to get me started?

Thanks,
Dennis

I would say strip it down and get a parts list together.

It is a 1979 or older unit just for reference..

Well my starting plan is to just get the motor running. After that I'll start the process of restoring/repairing the mower.

I believe my model is from 1975 but I don't know for sure. Here is the Serial Number: 345877. Will that help determining when it was made?

For $55, that is good I'd say!

Good luck with the restoration, and I'm sure you'll get answers to any questions you may have along the way from the knowledgeable people here!

Ok so tonight I took the flywheel off to check the condenser and points and it's not there  someone has stripped it off of this machine at some point. Luckily the parts don't seem to be too expensive does around $8.50 this sound right?

Also do I necessarily need this key switch?

There is one wire coming from underneath this plate that is not connected to anything I assume it might have went to a battery? Then there is also a wire coming off my magneto that is not connected to anything would this have been the other path off the battery?

Another problem I'm having is getting the main fuel jet nozzle out :mur: I'm starting to break the brass inside the slot. Any tips for getting this out?

That is likely the Kill switch... and the wire going to a magneto should Never be connected to the battery... When it is connected to ground it will kill the engine, When it is open it will allow the engine to be started...

Thanks Kenny, I have two wires coming off the Magneto one of them grounds to the case of the motor, the other is loose. Any idea where it needs to go? Does it go to the Kill Switch?

Thanks

The loose one should be the kill ... should go to an engine kill switch... :smile:KennyV

So since I do not have the key for the Kill Switch do I actually need that switch?

Also does anyone know if my '73 8hp Briggs actually needs a condenser and points to run? Or does that have something to do with an electronic iginition?

I can't imagine that the key for that switch is uniquely special... you should be able to find a replacement easily...
It should have points and a condenser, However there were replacement solid state devices made to replace the mechanical points... :smile:KennyV

Someone took the condenser and points out of the machine :( from what I'm understanding thought they are relatively cheap?

post a pic of the coil we should be able to tell you if it has been replaced with solid state ignotion, I would guess if it is that old it has been replaced, the key is stamdard , any dealer should have them for a dollar or two.

Just getting to seeing your post, hope not to late to help. Someone has replace the points and condenser with electrical coil.I can tell by the plug wire. Check engine for spark with kill wire off if you have spark check with kill wire on and switch on, no spark will mean a safty switch bad.You may have to soak carburetor in order to remove jets.Any mower key will fit that switch.Good luck.
