Our John Deere mower motor runs fine and blades turn, but won't go forward or reverse. Help! My husband was mowing yesterday and it was running fine until he heard something snap. He looked all over it today and couldn't find anything wrong. Any ideas???

First idea is I don't have any idea of what mower your are having a problem with.
JD only made about 90 models with a dozen or more variation of each one.
Some have belts,
some have chains
some have solid shafts
some have combinations of two or more above
But all have model numbers

What Bert means is, Please post your model number. If you need help finding it, just ask.

My John Deere L120 did the same thing yesterday. I think the transmission has died. It's a Tuff Torq K46. Look for the little tag on the right rear section of the tranny where the rear axle comes out. Been researching parts and repair costs. Like $700 and up....more than the mower is worth.

But good luck with yours.

Good news...I found on this website that I should check my TRANSMISSION DRIVE BELT. Sure enough, it was broken. Went to the local JD store and bought a new one. Major pain to replace. But there is a You tube video about how to do it.

It's a John Deere model 140; thanks for all the tips, I'll suggest them to my husband so he can check it.

An old 1968-1974 model 140 garden tractor? Or is it a newer LA140 or D140 lawn tractor?
