My Craftsman 917.270514 won't shift into gear, forward or reverse.
What would cause this?

Are you saying that it won't go into gear, or that is won't more after putting the direction selector into gear. I would start with making sure the belts are on all the pulleys and are in good shape.

Follow the linkage to the transmission.
There is a pivot pin that rotates/moves when you shift.
Possibly it is frozen/broken.
