I have a Yardman select series MTD model 13A0785t055 46 inch cut DOM 03/2011 ,mower moves slowly about slow walking speed, belts seem ok,my neighbor bought this mower new and it as always had this problem,he gave it to me and i checked the belts and pullys they seem ok,a repairman told me that alot of these come from the mfg about half full of oil in the hydrostatic transmission and i need to fill it on up with 40 or 50 weight oil but i can not find any place to add the oil,has anyone had this problem and whats the solution?

With a 5 year old mower the drive belt could still be the problem.. It is the one hidden up in the frame. Unless the tranny has leaked I am sure it has the correct amount of oil in it. the fill will be located at the top, most likely with a vent tube hooked to it. But without knowing how much oil is in the unit there is no way of knowing what the correct amount to add would be. Hydorgear uses a 20w-50 oil in their units.

Check to make sure the bypass lever is pushed all the way in on the back, as well as look up into the frame to check the condition and tightness of the drive belt. A 5 year old mower belt may have cracking, glazing, and pieces missing out of it.

If the tranny is making growling noises you may have other more severe issues with the tranny. The growl is different than the normal whine noise like when you push the go control very quickly. Your neighbor didn't happen to pull a lawn roller or something similar with it did he?

the tranny is not making any noise, although the mower shows mfd of 2011 he just bought it new in 2015 and used it one season mower still looks new,it doesn,t have a bypass lever at the back,he had it at the repair shop several times and they may have took it off don,t know and he died about a month ago so can,t ask, i will check the belt again

Disregard everything say, this is not a hydrostat transmission unit. This is a forward/reverse variable speed dual belt drive system. Most likely the variable pulley located around the area of the tranny is stuck, and the center section isn't moving preventing the speed from being changed.

If you look at the pulley where the two belts meet, there is a spacer between the two belts. Make sure it moves freely.
