However, briggs v-twins i found are around $800-900 USD, as the Predator on HF's website is $999.99...
I'm not knocking predators as they seem to do very decent considering the price point and parts can be found for the smaller horizontals, but not sure about the 22HP's, you can probably get a new carb, spark plug and coil, but are you going to be able find any internal parts? what if a head gasket blows? or a Governor gear lets go, or a camshaft goes bad? then you may have to spend another $800-1000 on replacing an engine just because you can't find one part.
I know for a 100% you can get the briggs parts.
the Briggs 44n677 intek is $630 on amazon, 1x 3-5/32 inch keyed crankshaft 9amp alternator
Scrubbie makes good points
I have just started to fit Loncin engines down in place of Briggs because my wholesalers are now stocking Loncin parts so I can fix them .
HF will blithely tell "Oh Honda parts will fit " but try asking them what Honda parts do actually fit , other than filters .
Plenty of superceeded Briggs engine for less than the preditor
a few examples
Briggs & Stratton 386447-3048-KC 23 HP Vanguard FKA 380447-0048

Not as many Kohlers under $ 1000 but if you fit one they will be plug & play including the muffler which can be a big problem on Hoppers
The preditor will be an exact replacement for a Honda engine so might not be the correct height and may not bolt up to your pulleys
Thanks for the info guys I’ll just have to do some digging see if I can find a good deal on one of these Briggs or another kohler

what was the model and spec number of the original kohler engine? Kohler probably has a direct replacement they might can point you towards if you give them the model and spec number of the engine.
