Met A Flat Earther

Was working the other day and met a guy that said he is a Flat Earther. I had never heard of such. I thought literally that this was a joke. He was sincere. I started asking questions after I stopped laughing. Every question I asked him he answered. This was one of the most intriguing conversations I have ever had in a long time. If you have never met one you have missed an interesting discussion.

It makes for an interesting debate with one that knows his stuff on the topic. I am at times easily amused but that was amusing.

if he got out of line with you, you could push him off the edge

First question I asked him where is the edge? He had an answer for that. That is the problem. He has an answer for any question you can ask him. He told me to watch some videos on Youtube. There are many, many of them and they have answers as well. All I can say is that they are fascinating to me.

I thought that the term was literally a joke for all of my life.

Never heard of a Flat Earther. How would he explain the countless pictures of the earth from space that clearly depict a round sphere? Sounds like the same people who still refute that man actually landed on the moon!

I have a buddy that's an iron worker and recently he worked on construction at Daytona Speedway in Florida when they constructed a whole new seating area over several years and the project was over a mile long. He said the architects had to allow for the curvature of the earth to design it. I had an aunt that lived in Titusville FL and worked near the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral. Before the first Apollo mission that landed on the moon lifted off, she came to Alabama and took my Grandmother and Grandfather back to Florida so they could see the liftoff. Not long afterwards I carried my Grandfather to get his hair cut as he was well in his 80's and a guy at the barber shop said he didn't believe that anyone landed on the moon and it was all just a big farce. My granddad spoke up and said "I don't know if they landed on the moon or not, but I saw them leave going somewhere".

If you do research EVERY picture from "space" is a CGI. (Computer Generated Image).

I thought that was not true but I looked and can't find evidence to refute it.

I started watching some of the videos on Youtube about it because I thought they were nuts. It is very interesting to see their theories and how they present them.

I am not convince myself but I promise you if you watch them you will think.

I suppose one could theorize about any subject they choose. That all goes out the window when documented proof shows up. After that, it's all opinion. As sergeant Friday used to say..."just the facts ma'am".

There is no credible way that thousands of pilots, sailers, astronauts and the like could be in collusion with each other and come up with the idea that there is no horizon. Here is a link to an article on the Popular Science site that offers not only detailed explanations as to why the earth cannot be flat, but also easy to understand diagrams and graphics. If you study the eclipse graphics,it clearly shows that the shadow from the earth on the moon is round.

At any rate I got no dog in this hunt. If anyone chooses to believe in a flat earth theory who am I to say they can't believe what they want to? It just surprises me to hear that there are still people out there who choose to believe this. No offense meant to anyone.

...incredible... have never heard of a Flat Earther. Did a web search and there are actually several societies online. Apparently some members are serious and some not. Why would one join a society they do not agree with? To disagree?
The last thought on my mind today when I signed in to the mower forums is to learn that there are people that still think our planet is FLAT ! No, scrap that, was not the last thing on my mind, actually it was never before a thought in my mind.

When I met the guy I honestly did not know that there really were people who today believed that the earth is flat. Needless to say it stretched my curiosity. I started watching videos on it on Youtube. It is definitely very interesting to see some of the arguments that many of them have.

A lot of them present questions that are hard to answer. The ones of Admiral Byrd Exploring Antartica are intriguing as well.

The ones with Airline flights out of the Southern Hemisphere are interesting. As well as the distances one can see from out on the oceans etc.

Perhaps you will invite him to the forum and will we also be able to communicate with him?

The men of the Apollo missions were the heroes of my youth. I’ve had the opportunity to speak with Col. Frank Borman, who was the commander of Apollo 8, which many of you recall, was the first space mission where men left the security of earth orbit and successfully entered into lunar orbit on Christmas Eve, 1968. I have also heard Gene Kranz, Director of Flight Operations, give his account of what all happened during the Apollo 13 explosion. To hear him speak is absolutely spell binding. The minute-by-minute details that he presents about that mission and the steps that were taken to bring those men back to earth alive, is absolutely breathtaking. The level of dedication that these men possessed and the application of their intelligence and leadership can only be something that history makers are born with.

Now you can believe anything you want to, but when you hear these men give an account that not only comes from their own recollections, but also from the depths of their heart, there is no possible way that it’s all a part of some fanciful conspiracy.

I really miss the NASA of my youth. It’s a crime that in many of our schools today, this effort and time period of our nation’s history is glossed over or largely ignored. I guess you just had to be there.

Flat earthers are a cult. Cannot be reasoned with. They have trolled other forums I am on. The best way the forums handle it is treat it as a religion, and ban it.

I have had the distinct honor to actually sit down with Gene Kranz in his home.
He lives about 6 blocks from my daughter's former residence.
What a great guy, and a great American.
He is one of my personal heroes (Chuck Yeager and Chesley Sullenburger are the other 2)

I lived in Orlando during the height of the early manned missions, and could see the rockets rise from my house.
What an electric time for exploration...and I have N O doubt that the events actually happened.

Exactly right.
If a person does not have the education to understand the maths behind physics while having a deeply suspicious mind then there is no rational way to dispel their beliefs and the ultimate outcome is violence .

Then how come you see the curvature of the earth from great heights?
Flat don't curve.

Flat don't curve.

You don't! It's an optical illusion caused by the refraction of light as it passes through the atmosphere.

Geesh...you people...you really think the earth is round? Seriously? If it is how come people don't slide off. You ever try to stand on the side of a ball?????

And BTW, I was an Environmental Scientist before my landscaping gig.

take a look at a Lunar eclipse....

moon_earth_shadow.jpg

A sequential view of the lunar eclipse that occurred on April 15, 2014. You can see Earth's shadow crossing the face of the Moon, and the shadow's shape is curved because Earth is spherical.

2.
How come one side of the earth is dark and one is light? if it were flat, wouln't it be light 24/7

and how come no flat earthers go up to space and take pictures of the "flat earth"?????
Geesh... you people... you really think the earth is flat?

IF that's the case, we would not have solar eclipses.
I believe the earth is flat when everyone who thinks it is flat, jump off the edge.

But there's no edge to jump off of!

You have just flown or sailed a circular pattern around the perimeter...
The Earth may be round, just not spherical..........

Anyone remember U-control model airplanes??
That hobby had the pilot standing in the middle of a circle, and the model plane flew around on lines from the pilot to the airplane.
Well the North Pole is actually jam-packed with pilots controlling the flight of trans global aircraft by means of control lines.....

Other way round Boo.
Vets have to be able to diagnose & cure anything from reptiles through to primates.
And none of them can tell you what the symptoms are.
So Vets are way way way above doctors who only have one species to deal with and then 75% of them get it wrong.
There is a reason why I have not been to a GP in 50 years or a hospital in 20

The problem was elucidated by Bertrand Russell decades ago
We all have a tendency to think that the world must conform to our prejudices.
The opposite view involves some effort of thought, and most people would die sooner than think – in fact they do so
.
One of my favourite quotes because it is 100% true.

Never met a flat earther as such, but once worked with a guy who believed in chem trails and such. You may believe so, but why are you constantly bugging us about it ? It was borderline religious obsession.
